South India & the Andaman Islands

Our visit to India turned out to be one of coming full circle, not once, but three times:

  1. *  After studying the tectonics of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea for 40 years, Joe was invited to speak at the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the Geological Society of India.

  2. *After visiting all three of southeast Asia’s greatest wonders of the ancient world:  Borobudur in Indonesia, Bagan in Myanmar, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, as well as Sri Lanka, we were able to visit the splendid Indian temples of the Chola Empire (9th-13th c) whose naval expeditions, as well as trade and diplomatic relations, expanded the Hindu and Buddhist culture across southeast Asia.  Two of these temple sites are UNESCO World Heritage Sites today.

  3. *After circumnavigating the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea during his years of research,  yet never setting foot on these paradise islands, we were able to do so.

We have divided our pictorial diary into six albums:  Bangalore, Trichy, Thanjavur, Pondicherry, Mamallapuram and the Andaman Islands.  Go to the top of each page and click on any of those titles in any order you choose to come with us on our latest venture to India.
